How to Spot AI-Generated Student Essays

intro to marketing
The traditional take-home essay forces students to research, synthesise ideas, and construct an argument in their own voice.

The End of the Traditional Take-Home Essay

Virtually overnight, educators have found themselves facing a quiet crisis: how do you grade an essay when you cannot be certain a human hand actually wrote it? In the past, spotting a copied essay was relatively straightforward. Students would copy and paste a Wikipedia entry, and a quick search or software check would highlight the stolen text immediately.

Generative AI is entirely different

It does not copy existing text; it generates original, grammatically flawless prose on demand. This means traditional anti-plagiarism tools are often left completely blind, leaving teachers to rely on subtler clues to spot machine-made work.

The most telling sign of an AI-generated essay is often its eerie perfection. Teenagers and young adults write with quirks such as using repetitive vocabulary, occasional clumsy phrasing, or eccentric sentence structures. AI, by contrast, tends to produce incredibly smooth, polite, and neutral text. If an essay reads like an overly polished corporate brochure, or uses phrases like “it is important to note” and “delve into” a suspicious number of times, it is a strong indicator that an algorithm may have written it.

The Problem of Invented Facts and Fabricated Sources

Another major giveaway is the phenomenon known as hallucination. AI models are essentially highly advanced guessing machines, and when they do not know a specific fact, they often make one up with absolute confidence. Teachers are increasingly finding essays that cite completely fictional books, misattribute historical quotes, or reference academic papers that simply do not exist. When a student’s bibliography contains sources that vanish upon closer inspection, the digital footprint becomes obvious.

Focusing on In-Class Assessment

Ultimately, the best defence a teacher has against AI cheating is knowing their students’ authentic voices. An unexpected jump in writing quality between an in-class assignment and a weekend essay is usually a red flag. Because of this, schools are shifting their focus away from the final product and looking closer at the process. Expect to see a return to supervised in-class writing, oral presentations, and viva-style examinations where students must verbally defend their arguments.

Redefining the Value of Writing

We are entering an era where the ability to generate text is no longer a premium skill. The challenge for modern education is not just about catching the cheaters, but about convincing students that the struggle of writing is where the actual learning happens. If we outsource our thinking to algorithms over the weekend, we risk graduating a generation of students who know how to prompt a machine, but no longer know how to formulate an original thought of their own.

Keep it simple

Don't make this harder than it really is. Just think like a consumer and keep your ideas simple for now. All we're doing here is getting used to thinking about our company critically and like a business person.

In the upcoming lessons we'll investigate these ideas in more depth.

older-man-thinking

Maybe the company you’re thinking of is a cafe that has great products.  But are there other cafe’s around that also sell great products that are similar? This may suggest a product orientation. What would a marketing orientation do?

As a consumer what else would you like this company to do?
